An idyllic ramble along the Loir River

A lazy, peaceful river, the Loir begins its winding route near the town of Illiers-Combray - a landscape made famous by Marcel Proust.

Marcel Proust - Patrick Forget / www.sagaphoto.comCreating a ribbon of green through fields of wheat, the Loir crosses the plains of the Beauce Dunoise, onto Cloyes-sur-le-Loir - a popular spot for renting a canoe or kayak - and continues as far as the Sarthe region. The river is popular with fisherman as well as providing beautiful views of the countryside. Bordering the riverbanks, you'll see and impressive historic sites like the 19th-century château de Montigny-le-Gannelon and several picturesque villages. A perfect "retreat" for anyone in need of a little oxygen.
