The medieval garden of Bois-Richeux

Step back in time to the Middle Ages in this completely restored garden.

Jardin de Bois-Richeux - Copyright Patrick Forget www.sagaphoto.comThe garden at Bois-Richeux is a treat for the senses and the spirit. Completely reconstructed, using historic texts and drawings; this traditional medieval garden includes plants used for medicinal cures and possibly poisons, aromatic herbs, a vegetable garden, strawberries and fruit trees all arranged in beds in a grid pattern. Romantic flowers include irises, peonies and roses. There are over 200 plant varieties within the enclosure of a 12th-14th century farm.

The medieval garden was a sanctuary, a place where man cultivated nature and studied its uses. Great care has been taken to recreate this sense of peace. The garden also includes rare and forgotten plant varieties.

Best of all, the garden is a place of constantly changing beauty.

Once part of Madame de Maintenon’s lands, Bois Richeux is located between Maintenon and the small town of Pierres.
