The medieval city of Châteaudun

Château de Châteaudun - Patrick Forget / www.sagaphoto.comChâteaudun’s feudal fortress perches 31 meters above the Loir River. An impressive site from which to view this historic valley!

The city of Châteaudun is forever linked to the historic figure of Jean le Dunois. Dunois, an illegitimate grandson of Charles V, was the brave fighting companion of Joan of Arc. In 1460 he built his manor high on a cliff, overlooking the Loir River. Today the late Gothic castle is open to the public. You can visit the rooms with their collection of tapestries, climb the beautiful staircase and see the chapel with its exquisite statues. Then, wander the narrow streets of the Old Town, taking the 200 steps that lead down to the river.

Considered the “first” real chateau of the Loire Valley thanks to the great hall in the Italian Renaissance style that was added in the early 16th century. Châteaudun is a perfect starting point on any Loire Valley visit.

Don’t miss: Throughout the summer medieval feasts are held in the chateau. Discover the food, music and customs of the Middle Ages while enjoying a hearty meal and getting to know the locals!
