A weekend in Chartres with friends!
There's nothing like a city break in Chartres, just 1 hour from Paris, to make the most of a weekend in the countryside with friends. Tribe mode is on, and you're off to the Eure-et-Loir with your friends. Chartres is easily accessible from Montparnasse station, which is right in the city centre! Let's set off to discover Chartres, the international capital of stained glass, and its cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
To each his own room at the Boeuf Couronné with cathedral views
At the end of the line, everyone gets off at Chartres station and all you have to do is walk 200 metres up the Avenue Jehan de Beauce to get to l’hôtel Le Boeuf Couronné. From here you can enjoy your first stay in a magnificent city-centre hotel, with cathedral-view rooms (please!). The hotel also has a gourmet restaurant, L'Amphytrion, and a lounge bar, Le Christie's, for convivial moments with friends.
Discover the Maison Picassiette
First discovery in Chartres: la Maison Picassiette. A jewel of art brut on the outskirts of Chartres, easily accessible on foot from the city centre (30 minutes on foot) or by bus on lines 6, 8 or 11, which you can catch in front of the media library.
Don't be afraid to step into the small entrance hall and come face to face with this house entirely covered in mosaic from head to toe. This impressive work was created by Raymond Isidore, also known as Monsieur Picassiette, a nickname given to him by the locals who used to bring him their broken china. This house, built between 1938 and 1964, is entirely decorated with mosaics made from broken crockery and other salvaged materials.
A visit here is immediately struck by the richness of the colours and patterns. Each piece tells its own story, ranging from nature scenes to biblical representations. The gardens, dotted with statues and fountains, add to the magic of the place. La Maison Picassiette is the embodiment of art brut and self-construction, a testament to overflowing creativity. It's a place where art transforms the everyday into something extraordinary, offering an immersive and inspiring experience.
Stained glass creation at the Atelier Picol
Taking part in a stained-glass workshop at Atelier Picol à Chartres is an ideal way to spend a weekend in Chartres, especially as a get-together with friends. As soon as you enter, you are greeted by the warm atmosphere of the workshop, where the light plays with the colours of the glass pieces.
The workshop begins with an introduction to traditional stained glass techniques, with Kévin Picol passionately sharing his expertise. We learn how to choose the pieces of glass, cut them with precision and assemble them. Each step reveals the complexity and beauty of this art form. By playing with shapes and colours, each participant can give free rein to his or her imagination. The assembly of the pieces and the final welding give life to our work, which gradually takes shape before our very eyes.
When you leave the workshop, you leave not only with a unique piece of stained glass, but also with a new appreciation for this age-old art. This experience at Atelier Picol, during a weekend in Chartres, will be remembered as a moment of authentic creation and personal discovery among friends.
