The fortified complex was built in the 12th century by Hugh II of Châteauneuf, lord of Thymerais, as an outpost of the Capetian royal estate to defend against the Duchy of Normandy.
In the heart of the Perche Regional Park in a large forest, Senonches is the perfect reflection of the Perche spirit: nature, culture and heritage. Its 13th century château is a reminder of the days when the town defended the Capetian kingdom. The town is also worth a visit. The volunteers from the tourist office will show you around the monuments and natural features of the town before you head off along the many footpaths in and around Senonches. Anglers will also find all they need. Water is everywhere here with streams, rivers and lakes.
